“He doesn’t look like anything’s wrong with him.”
I know it is meant as a compliment, but it’s a statement that saddens my heart. Truth is, there’s nothing “wrong” with my son. He has autism. That doesn’t make him “wrong” or make something about him “wrong.” He has challenges. As a family, we face challenges many will never know about, but that doesn’t make anything “wrong.”
The reality is, we all have different issues in our lives that aren’t exactly what we thought would be happening, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that things are “wrong.” Life is full of challenges for everyone, some just choose to make the best of all situations and work through whatever it is as best they can. That doesn’t make them “right” or “wrong,” but it does open the door to a world of possibilities.
