Autism & The Color Run

Contemplating my topic of the week, I realized I’ve never really hit any official description autism, just wrote more about our life on the spectrum, which of course makes sense given the title.  But if you’ve ever wondered…exactly what is autism?  Here’s a good place to start your investigation.
But really, if you have any questions, just ask.  It’s not a secret.  Ben has autism.  And we love him just the same.  We’ll tell you all about him & brag him up just like we would any of our kids.  He’s a blessing beyond measure, just like our four neurotypical kids.  No secrets.  No shame.  Just ask…when you get to know him, you’ll come to realize he really is pretty Amazing Unigue Totally Interesting and Sometimes Mysterious but always a blessing.
Last summer, my cousin called me all giddy with excitement that a group of people from her workplace had formed a team for The Color Run in St. Louis and wanted to invite hubs & me to join them because a) we run for St. Jude and more importantly b) the benefactor was Autism Speaks.  It took everything I had to turn her down as I was already coordinating a local run that same day.
Imagine our excitement when we discovered The Color Run in St. Louis would again benefit Autism Speaks and this year there would be two opportunities to participate.  And then it started happening, family by family, our team grew.  Registration hasn’t even opened yet and we’re already up to a couple dozen strong just in verbal committments.  And you can join us!  Whether you run every day, or dream of never running by choice, this is for you.  Whether you’re 10 and under or 110 and over, this is for you.  You see, it’s not about the run, it’s about raising awareness and funds for Autism Speaks, the world’s leading autism science and advocacy organization, dedicated to funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a cure for autism; increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders; and advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families.
If you’d like to join us on run day, you can check out The St. Louis Fall Color Run at and even register there beginning Jan. 15.  If you’d just like to join us on the journey, join the facebook group:  Color Me BENTON .  We’ll keep you posted along the way and share photos on run day.
What a blessing.  What a blessing, indeed.  Color on, Mr. Ben!
